Equity is not the whole answer

You know your equity. GTO Wizard shows how to play the hand.

Equity tells you how often a hand wins if the cards are run out. It does not say whether to bet, call or fold before the river: position, bet sizes and the ranges that reach each street decide that. GTO Wizard has solved strategies for these spots.

How to use the equity calculator

  1. 1.Type a hand for player 1 (AhKh) or a range (QQ+, AKs), or open the range grid and click the hands.
  2. 2.Do the same for player 2, or leave the field empty to play against a random hand. Add up to two more players.
  3. 3.Add the flop, turn or river if you want (Ah 7c 2d), and any dead cards you know.
  4. 4.Click Calculate equity: you get each player’s equity, and how often they win outright or split.

How to write hands and ranges

Cards are a rank (A K Q J T 9
 2) and a suit (c d h s). Ranges use the usual poker notation, separated by commas:

AhKh
one exact hand: ace of hearts, king of hearts
AKs / AKo / AK
AK suited (4 combos), offsuit (12) or both (16)
QQ+
QQ, KK and AA
77-55
77, 66 and 55
ATs+
ATs, AJs, AQs and AKs
K9o-K6o
K9o, K8o, K7o and K6o
(empty)
a random hand: any two cards

What poker equity means

Equity is your share of the pot if all the remaining cards are dealt and nobody folds. With 60% equity in a 100-chip pot, you win 60 chips on average over many run-outs: ties split the pot, so a split counts as half (or a third with three players).

Against a range, your equity is the average over every hand in that range, weighted by how many combos of each are still possible once your cards and the board are removed. That is why the calculator removes card conflicts: if you hold the ace of hearts, your opponent cannot.

The calculation is exact when the spot is small enough: one hand against one hand preflop means 1,712,304 boards to deal, which your browser enumerates in well under a second. Ranges and multiway pots are estimated from 1,000,000 random deals, which is accurate to about a tenth of a point.

Equity is not the same as expected value. It ignores the betting still to come: a hand with 40% equity can be a fold or a profitable call depending on the price, and position and future bets change how much of that equity you actually realise.

Famous preflop matchups

All-in before the flop, averaged over every suit combination:

Preflop all-in equity of common matchups
HandAgainstEquity
AAKK82.0%
AA72o88.2%
KKAKs65.9%
QQAKo56.8%
22AKo52.7%
AKs7747.7%
AKoAQo74.4%
T9sAKo40.5%

Specific suits shift these numbers slightly: AhAs against KcKd is not exactly AA against KK on average. Type the exact cards to see it.

Poker equity calculator FAQ

How do I calculate equity in poker?

Count how often each hand wins or splits over every possible run-out of the remaining cards. By hand, players use shortcuts like the rule of 4 and 2 for draws; this calculator deals the boards for you, exactly when possible and otherwise from a million random deals.

What is range vs range equity?

The equity of every hand in one range against every hand in the other, weighted by the combos still possible after card removal. It is how you compare a shoving range with a calling range, or your range with your opponent’s.

Is this poker odds calculator free?

Yes, completely free, with no account and no download. It runs in your browser.

Does it work for Omaha (PLO)?

No, this calculator is for Texas Hold’em only.

How accurate is the result?

Exact when every combination can be dealt (for example one hand against one hand). Otherwise it uses 1,000,000 random deals: the result is within about 0.1 point of the exact equity.

Can I use an equity calculator while playing?

Not during a hand at online rooms: their rules forbid tools that help you make decisions while you play. Use it to study your hands after the session.
